• Terminal B: After collecting your baggage, follow the signs to ‘Car Services.’ This will lead you to Level 2 of the Terminal B Parking Garage. Do not book your ride until you’re near the garage to avoid extra fees. It’s a bit of a walk but if you really want this service, you have to take it.
• Terminal C: Uber/Lyft pickups are conveniently located right outside baggage claim at the ‘Car Service’ sign.
• Taxi: Available on the same level as baggage claim; just follow the signs for ‘Taxi’.

2. Bus: Budget-Friendly and Accessible

There are numerous buses at LGA airport and it is not only easily assessable but one of the busses is free.

• Q70 Bus (Terminal B & C):
  • Free service making only two stops: Roosevelt Ave/75th St and Woodside Ave/61st St.
    • Connects to E, F, M, R, and 7 trains at Roosevelt Ave/75th St.
    • Connects to LIRR-Woodside Station for a direct train to Penn Station or Grand Central ($5).

• All car rental shuttle buses offer free pick-up and drop-off services at or near each terminal.

Leaving JFK Airport

1. Uber/Lyft: Fastest but Most Expensive

• Terminal 8: Catch your ride right at baggage claim.
• All Terminals: For a cheaper option, take the AirTrain to Federal Circle and call your Uber/Lyft from there.

2. AirTrain: Efficient and Cost-Effective

• Jamaica Station Connection:
  • Connect to Long Island Railroad (LIRR) for direct service to Atlantic Terminal (Barclays Center), Penn Station, or Grand Central ($7.00 peak, $5 off-peak).
  • Connect to E, J, or Z subway lines.
  • Note: Exiting at Jamaica Station costs $8.50 (pay with OMNY or MetroCard). I find this absurd and there is no way around avoiding paying to exit, there are police officers all around the exit at all hours. Even 2am in the morning.
• Federal Circle Connection:
  • Connect to rental cars, hotel shuttles, and pre-paid parking.
• Howard Beach Connection:
  • Connect to the A train, long-term parking, or visit Far Rockaway Beach.

Overwater Bungalows: The Secret to Saving Money

Those stunning overwater bungalows you see? Most people don’t pay full price, and neither did I! The trick is to use your points. When booking at a name-brand hotel, you can buy points and use them for your stay. It’s a huge money-saver!

Instead of choosing a date to visit the Maldives, let the Maldives choose a date for you. In other words, wait for sales or bonus points. Hilton and Marriott often have sales or promotions when it comes to points. They might offer to match the points you buy, give you 3x more points when you buy a certain number, or let you book a stay on selective dates for 25-50% off points. Deals like this can turn a $14,000 stay into just $4,000. It’s worth signing up for hotel newsletters and keeping an eye on these promotions.

Seaplane and Seaboat Transfers: What You Need to Know

While using points for the hotel stay is great, there is a catch: the seaplane or seaboat transfer costs. You’ll have to pay full price for these transfers, and let me tell you, they are expensive with no way around it.

Once you land at Male International Airport (MLE), you’ll need to take a seaplane or seaboat to your island. The seaplanes, contracted with Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA), can’t be booked on your own unless you know a pilot. These tiny planes are pricey, and you’ll be sharing them with 14 other passengers. The further your hotel, the higher the cost.

I paid $595 per person for a 25-minute seaplane ride. Note that seaplanes operate only between 6am and 3:30pm. Make sure your flight to MLE arrives early, or you’ll need to stay overnight in MLE or take a more expensive seaboat.

Getting to Male International Airport (MLE)

Flying directly from the US or Europe to the Maldives can be incredibly expensive. If you can’t afford a direct flight, consider making it a two-country trip by flying through India, Sri Lanka, or Qatar. These countries are right next to the Maldives, and flights from them are much cheaper. I flew from Sri Lanka for under $200!

If that’s not an option, look for connecting flights from the US with layovers in Singapore, Dubai, or Qatar. These countries are great for layovers as there’s so much to do and explore. Call the airline and ask if you can extend your layover to 1-3 days at no additional cost—it doesn’t hurt to ask!

When landing in MLE airport, you’ll go through customs and immigration before connecting to your seaplane or seaboat for your hotel. The Maldives has about 200 inhabited islands and approximately 97 islands with tourist resorts. Your hotel website should provide details on the island you’ll be staying on and usually handles booking your seaplane or seaboat for you.

Baggage Allowance and Cultural Considerations

Seaplanes have a baggage allowance of 20kg for checked luggage and 5kg for hand luggage per person. Excess baggage costs $5 per kg, and prices might have increased since my last visit in 2023. Pack wisely to avoid extra charges.

Remember, Islam is the state religion of the Maldives. While locals understand that tourists are not Muslim, be respectful of local customs and dress codes. On resorts, swimwear can only be worn in your villa and by the beach. When walking elsewhere on the resort, you need to be covered up. Respect the local culture and guidelines to have a pleasant stay.

Alcohol and Weather Considerations

Bringing alcohol into the Maldives is restricted. You can only purchase it once you’re in the country, and it’s quite expensive. Plan accordingly!

The weather in the Maldives can be unpredictable. It rains a lot, even during the so-called non-rainy season. The rain can last between 5 to 10 minutes, but it pours hard. Be prepared for sudden showers.

All-Inclusive Packages: Worth the Splurge

When booking your stay in an overwater bungalow, I highly recommend opting for an all-inclusive package. The only option to eat is from the resort since you’re stuck on the island. Buying food on the property is extremely pricey—I paid $40 for plain pasta!  If the hotel only provides half-board or full-board options, I recommend half-board. Not only is it cheaper, but the amount of food provided at the buffet will surely fill you up.

Activities and Island Life: My Honest Opinion

In my opinion, the Maldives can get boring quickly, especially if you don’t have the budget to enjoy it to the fullest. While there are numerous activities to do, they can be quite expensive. Activities like snorkeling, diving, paddleboarding, sailing, watersports, biking, tennis, and movie nights are available, but you can do these same activities in other countries for half the price.

To me, the Maldives is more of a refresh-and-disconnect getaway—a place to relax and become more in tune with yourself. I mean, you’re stuck on an island, so what else is there to do? Haha! I can understand why it’s a popular honeymoon destination or, as I call it, a “baby-making” destination. There’s really only one thing you can do out there with your partner!

Welcome to my Solo Traveler’s Guide unveiling the Taj Mahal  The realm of India’s enchanting wonders, where every stone tells a story and every glance at the Taj Mahal is a brushstroke on the canvas of your solo adventure. As a solo black American female traveler, my journey through India was filled with complexities and surprises.

As you continue reading this blog, I will provide details of not only my experience solo traveling to India, but a comprehensive guide to the Taj Mahal and Solo travel tips in India.  You should know when visiting and the dos and don’t when at the Taj Mahal.

Visa Requirements:

As an American, you need to obtain a visa to visit. You will need to apply for a visa here: Link for Visa

To apply for an e-tourist visa. It cost me $40 for a year visa. It only took 26 hours to get approved. Make sure you have an electronic copy and a physical copy showing proof of your visa. In case your phone dies while at custom, I always suggest having a physical copy as well.

Flight Information:

I caught a red eye flight from JFK Thursday night. This was a 15-hour flight so by the time I landed in India, it is already Friday night. Which worked for me as the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. Since this flight was 15+ hours, I had to sit in Business and It is worth it.

Navigating DEL Airport

Arriving at the DEL airport around 9:30 pm, I was welcomed by a vibrant atmosphere. The airport is a buzzing hub, even in the late hours. No need to worry about safety; it’s open 24/7, and security is vigilant. New York has nothing on India. India is the true definition of never sleeping.

Now that I’ve been to India I can definitely tell you, order an Uber or pay for a cab at the airport. It is much cheaper. Public transportation is also a good way to go but since I am not familiar with the country’s transportation, I am not able to give you any tips unfortunately.

Options for Airport Transport:

• Hotel Pick-Up: Opting for convenience on my first visit, I paid for a hotel pick-up. In hindsight, I recommend an Uber or a cab for a more budget-friendly choice.

I paid $40 for a one-way ride to my hotel, but an Uber would have been a mere $4. Near baggage claim, there’s a reliable taxi stand where you pay and is escorted to your taxi. Avoid hopping into cars outside the airport; safety first!

• Public Transportation: For the adventurous souls, there’s a train near the airport connecting directly to Agra, home to the Taj Mahal. A round trip to the Taj Mahal and back to the airport can cost less than $40.  Mind you, the Taj Mahal is a 3-4 hour drive from New Delhi.

Pro Tip:

• Beware of Unofficial Taxis: Resist the temptation to jump into a car with someone yelling “taxi” outside the airport; it’s a potential safety risk. Again, I recommend going to the taxi both located inside the airport to request a ride if you opt out of requesting an Uber.

Cracking the Wi-Fi Code:

• DEL Airport Wi-Fi: Unlike other airports, DEL has a unique Wi-Fi setup. Instead of a simple sign-up, they request your passport number. I do not trust that at all. For longer stays, consider getting a local SIM card for hassle-free connectivity.

My Hotel: The Lodhi

Imagine arriving at your destination and being greeted like royalty by your own personal fan club – well, that’s how my grand entrance at when reached ‘Arrivals’ at DEL Airport. My hotel driver was there holding a sign with my name on it – cue the princess moment! I mean, who doesn’t secretly love feeling like a VIP with their biggest fan holding a sign, right?

And the bougie journey began, A mere 25-minute drive from the airport. My ride to the hotel was a dive into sheer luxury. The car had Wifi (yes, you read that right). It was the kind of fancy I could get used to.

Staying at The Lodhi, a luxurious haven , was pure indulgence. And being an AMEX Platinum gal, I was in for some extra treats through the Fine Hotels + Resort perks – room upgrades, free breakfast, guaranteed late checkout, and a sweet experience credit (spa or lunch).

This bougie babe opted for the ‘LODHI PREMIER ROOM,’ complete with a private plunge pool because, why not? It was my birthday, after all! A simple email to the hotel about my celebration plans, and voila – a complimentary cake and candle by the pool. Nothing says celebration like a midnight dip, right?

Pro tip: Always mention your birthday! The hotel not only arranged a cake but also threw in a candlelit poolside setup – all complimentary!

But here’s the real game-changer – a personal assistant at my beck and call. Arriving close to 10:30pm and with a 2 am Taj Mahal expedition on the cards, she became my lifesaver.

By the time I settled in, I showered, created some content, the staff sung happy birthday to me and I had my personal assistant help me put on my saree. Child, I was struggling trying to put it on. This glam adventure included a late-night saree struggle because who doesn’t need a wardrobe malfunction in India, right?

Because I knew I was landed in India late and leaving for the Taj Mahal at 2am, I had to buy my saree in America which of course is more expensive than buying it in India. I ordered my Saree on Amazon for $50. Truly thankful my personal assistant was able to help me.

Taj Mahal Tour

For an unforgettable Taj Mahal experience, I opted for the Private Sunrise Tour from Delhi by Car with Keeperlandwey (check them out here: Keeper IG or Trip Advisor). This all-inclusive package provided a dedicated driver, a knowledgeable tour guide, and seamless entry to the Taj Mahal. I skipped the food option, preferring to explore the local street fare as it is much cheaper.

Note: If you wait to buy your ticket to enter the Taj Mahal the day of, have a local buy your ticket as foreigners are charged a higher price.

The adventure kicked off at 2 am when my driver whisked me from my hotel for the 3-4 hour drive to the Taj Mahal. Arriving 30 minutes before sunrise is a game-changer.

Tips for the Taj Mahal:

Here are some valuable tips for navigating the Taj Mahal:

1. Early Bird Gets the View: Arrive early to beat the crowds. Try arriving 10min before the gates open
2. Consider a Guide: Walking to the Taj Mahal entrance involves navigating through local areas. While the Taj Mahal is beautiful, getting to the entrance of entering the Taj Mahal you’re walking in the slum. I am not exaggerating! My driver had to stop at a certain point and my tour guide, Sadiq, and I had to walk the remainder distance towards the entrance.
3. Pack Smart: The Taj Mahal has strict rules about what you can bring. Leave backpacks, larger bags, food, tobacco, drones, GoPros, headphones, jewelry, and tripods at home. So if you’re looking to take pictures of yourself, I suggest hiring a tour guide.
4. Photography Dilemma: While there are photographers on-site, be cautious about scams. Negotiate prices before snapping, and bring your flash drive for instant photo transfers. Also, don’t pay until after you receive your photos. Then again, if you have a tour guide, they will be able to take your photos for you using your phone or camera.
5. Respect Local Customs: Dress modestly, respecting the sacred nature of the monument and the mosque within. India is a Muslim country so be mindful of how you’re dressing. Given that this is a functioning mosque and literal tomb, it’s probably not the place to show a whole lot of booty and tits. Be respectful.

Again, I highly suggest getting a guide especially if you’re a female solo traveler. It’s a great way to learn more about the history of a place, have your own personal photographer/videographer who can capture the right angles for you and know the best location for pictures, and you’re able to support a local.  However, getting a reliable and knowledgeable guide at the Taj Mahal can be a bit tricky. You don’t want to end up being scam like how it showed in the movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’: Jamal and his elder brother Saleem, stealing shoes of foreigners and running away with them, pretending to be tour guides just to collect the money, and of visitors being harassed by guides and other agents.

Conclusion:

Agra, the city housing the Taj Mahal, has its quirks. Pollution and scammers abound, so staying vigilant is key. Visiting the Taj Mahal is probably on your bucket list- and it absolutely should be! It’s one of the most romantic and opulent monuments.

My tour guide, Sadiq from Keeperlandwey, was an absolute gem. More than just a guide, he played the roles of photographer, videographer, and protector. His local expertise ensured a hassle-free visit, shielding me from persistent sellers and providing valuable insights into the city’s history.

Picking cruelty-free

Selecting a sanctuary committed to cruelty-free practices is paramount. My quest led me to the extraordinary Millennium Elephant Foundation, where a profound dedication to the well-being of these majestic creatures is evident at every turn. Here, elephants gracefully roam expansive grounds, unburdened by chains, as the sanctuary places their needs above all else. The philosophy is simple yet profound – if the elephants aren’t at ease with human interactions, the sanctuary actively discourages such encounters to shield these incredible beings from any potential distress. Join me as we unravel the tale of a sanctuary that not only cherishes the essence of elephants but also prioritizes their comfort over tourist interests, creating a harmonious haven for both wildlife and wanderers alike.

Countless reserves pretend to be sanctuaries, but the best way to distinguish them is by the type of activities. True sanctuaries don’t allow riding elephants or any activity that could inflict stress on the gentle souls, so I knew to avoid those typical ‘ride-an-elephant’ reserves.

Circus Entertainment

It’s also best to avoid any parks that romanticize animal entertainment. So avoid reserves, making the elephants do neat tricks and circus stunts to entertain tourists.

Lax security

Most people forget elephants are wild animals that will react negatively if you provoke them, sometimes even without provocation. Most are incredibly forgetful about an elephant’s sheer strength; these creatures weigh several thousand tons and can easily crush you to a mince if you’re not careful.

Yet, countless sanctuaries don’t advertise this because they feel it can affect their business.

However, Millennium was very upfront about its animals, and I’m pretty grateful for that because I knew they wouldn’t be putting me or the elephants in dangerous situations. I liked their honesty a lot, and I’m quite grateful because countless tourists are purposely kept in the dark and later suffer.

But the Millennium Elephant Foundation was as truthful as one could be; they let me know what to expect and how to treat the elephants and strictly guided against injurious or dramatic activities. It really says a lot about their character and proves they aren’t risking anything.

Sanctuary experience: Bliss on earth

Honestly, I’m still quite amazed by how smooth my experience went. I contacted the foundation and booked a tour of their reserve. I was surrounded by refreshing lush trees, and the slight gurgle of the river just added to the serenity.

The elephants were one of the most gorgeous creatures I’ve ever seen. I mean, you don’t know the majesty of an elephant until you’re up close, and I finally understood why safaris and exploration parks are so popular

Although the elephants at the sanctuary were quite docile, I knew not to mess with them since they were used to being out in the open. It was eye-opening because I genuinely felt like I was the guest in their house.

Experience Highlights

Although all the elephants were gorgeous and gentle, I was lucky to meet Pooja, the first elephant born in captivity in Sri Lanka. And she was honestly my favorite part of the trip.

Pooja been raised at the sanctuary, but you could tell she was a free spirit and even a little cheeky. I would be devastated if I decided on a sanctuary that didn’t let its elephants embrace their wild side.

Museum tour

The experience started with a guided museum tour where I learned about the foundation’s history and its efforts for the elephants. The foundation is more than just a sanctuary; it rescues captive elephants and rehabilitates them in the wild

Over the decades, the foundation has cared for more than 80 elephants, 9 living in the sanctuary. The foundation strictly abides by the rules of the Sri Lankan Tourism Development Authority and is the only certified non-profit organization.

The more I learned about their history and how the elephants were treated, the more I realized how caring, compassionate, and kind this foundation was.

Feeding time

Most zoos and reserves have a strict no-feeding policy, but the Millennium Elephant Foundation was much more open-minded. But don’t take it as mistreatment; the fruits they provided were Pooja’s favorite food, Fruits. The fruits were organic and grown on their farms, nothing harmful. After my guided museum tour, I got the chance to feed Pooja. Pooja did not play about her food, she got in her bag when I did not have any more food to give her. One thing I can say about Elephants is they love to eat

Scenic walk

After feeding Pooja, I got the chance to do a guided walk with her. I highly recommend it since it lets you get close to the mighty beings and see their daily routine

Since the elephants typically stayed in one part of the reserve, the foundation was planned around their territory. This made me oddly happy because the sanctuary didn’t drag out the elephants just for our sake.

The walk was roughly 30 minutes, during which I learned more about the elephants, their lifestyle, and their surrounding nature.

Bathing and showering

I headed to the river, where the elephants sprawled on the rocks. Here, with the help of tour guides, I got to bathe Pooja

Pooja’s playful attitude completely erased any fears and anxiety I had. If you’re wondering what fears/anxiety a person can have while bathing the elephants; let me remind you elephants weighs several thousand tons and on top of that, you don’t know what’s in the water with you. But on the other hand, I couldn’t believe I was best friends with an elephant.

Phenomenal staff

The staff was open, honest, and informative. I was baffled by their honesty; they let me know the dos and don’ts and were quite firm.

They didn’t belittle me or make me feel awkward/stupid for asking a question. I kept asking about the elephants, the sanctuary, and their lifestyle, and the guides told me everything in detail.

They’re also fantastic at handling anxiety. If you’re nervous about being up close with an elephant, the guides will help you ease into the environment so you can interact peacefully.

A Bittersweet end

Staying this close with the elephants helped me bond and connect with the problems these majestic giants face in reality. This sanctuary provides the elephants with a safe and accessible home. It was surreal witnessing their happiness and realizing most animals don’t experience such a lavish life in reality

It gives you a closer glimpse into the dangers of poaching and hunting and makes you closer to the elephants.

No matter how many hours I spent with Pooja, it felt like I could never get enough. I was devastated I had to leave. I still recall her adorable antics, playful attitude, and cheerful environment, which made my experience so special. Eventually, I left with so many unforgettable memories and an emotional goodbye. This was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had, and I honestly wish I could return.

Nestled among the trees and mountains, Tree House Chalet beckoned me for an adventure like no other. The moment I set foot inside this enchanting retreat, a staff greeted me so warm and welcoming that it felt like they were as excited about my arrival as I was. Checking in was a breeze, and once I entered my room, I realized that I was in for some serious pampering. Although this was a solo adventure, in this little corner of paradise, I never once felt alone.

Making Myself At Home

The hotel offers numerous luxurious suites and chalets. I stayed in ‘Dunhinda Chalet’. The delightful scenery outside my window pulled me like a moth drawn to light. The sun setting between the hills and glistening from behind the tree branches painted the perfect picture and one I eagerly drank in.

A word to the wise, remember that you are in a forest, so stocking up on bug repellent and mosquito spray is a must – these little critters have a fondness for foreign blood. Also, I highly recommend bringing hiking boots. This city girl overlooked these essentials, but to my surprise, the hotel had my back with hiking boots in my size. The odds were in my favor!

What sets this hotel apart is its versatility. Whether you are a Type A or Type B personality, you will never find a dull moment. For the first time in my travels, I abandoned my meticulously planned itineraries, and to my delight, the hotel had thoughtfully arranged activities for my stay. This unexpected turn of events led me out of my comfort zone. I found myself hiking – not once, but twice in a single day, an experience I never imagined but now hold dear.

A Heavenly Breakfast

At Tree House Chalet, they take the concept of “farm to table” to the next level with a sprawling 750-square-foot organic greenhouse, entirely sustainable, where an abundance of fruits and vegetables flourish. What is truly remarkable is that the food served here is sourced from this very greenhouse. As a guest, I had the privilege of savoring the best, freshest, and most organic produce.

One of the culinary highlights was the traditional Sri Lankan breakfast. Now, I consider myself a bit of a picky eater, but this morning delight won me over. Sri Lankan breakfast is a world away from the typical American fare; it is a delightful fusion of flavors. Picture this: curry and string hoppers accompanied by an array of spices that take your taste buds on a tantalizing journey. While it might feel more like dinner than breakfast, the embrace of another culture’s culinary traditions was a revelation, and I could not complain because it was undeniably good.

To top it off, what stood out during my Sri Lankan solo adventure was the abundance of freshly made juices. Each sip was a burst of refreshment and a vibrant blend of flavors.

As a city girl looking to break free from my comfort zone, my goal for this trip was to immerse myself in the wonders of Mother Nature. Tree House Chalet provided the ideal platform for this. For thrill-seekers, an exciting 4WD ride takes them to the most adventurous hiking trail, where they can get the desired adrenaline rush by hiking to the top. Those seeking a relaxed, yet exciting experience can camp on the island, kayak on the local lake, and return to the hotel when they are satisfied.

Oh, but I don’t think that is where the magic ends. While many resorts worldwide ignore influencers, Tree House Chalet is one of the few that welcomes them with an open heart and even hosts them in an Influencer Program, where participants can avail resort amenities and facilities and return the favor by spreading the love and sharing their experience on social media.

These are not the only perks; Tree House Chalet offers influencer-special discounts and activities, so it’s easier for their audience to see how lovely the resort is. Although I am pretty sure anyone who looked up the resort would be captivated by its glowing reviews and high-end experiences.

Customer Satisfaction

The staff was ready to answer all my queries and ease my concerns the minute I poked my head out the door. Honestly speaking, it was a spoiling I had to get used to. But the love and support from the hotel staff completely wiped out any concerns I had, not that there were many.

Truthfully, my experience at the Tree House Chalet goes beyond expectations. I imagined it would be one of those resort experiences where you are happy with the outcome. Tree House Chalet offers a range of activities that are not only diverse but also exquisitely tailored to your preferences. Many people believe traveling solo on a limited budget is impossible, especially when your dream destination is one of the Big Five (NYC, Paris, Tokyo, London, and Rome). It doesn’t really help that all we have to reference is the plethora of influencer experiences on TikTok, which downplays the whole idea. But those are just a sham, and this is coming from someone who lives in one of the Big Five and has been to Paris several times.

I understand the idea of traveling solo, especially to populous cities, is nerve-wracking, but trust me, you can do it, and that too on a budget. There are a few tips and tricks that will help you out, but let’s first talk about Paris.

Multifaceted Charm of Paris

From social media, we’ve all imagined Paris as some type of enchanter where the dimly-lit streets and candlelight dinners conjure up romance. As magical as Paris is, we’ve been seeing it from rose-tinted glasses. And I don’t mean that the city is bad because it’s immensely beautiful, but there is so much more to Paris than just seeing the Eiffel Tower from your up-class hotel’s balcony.

If I’m being honest, I am not sure why Paris is referenced as the “City of Love”, especially since the Eiffel Tower was only built to be displayed at Paris’s 1889 World Fair. It was supposed to be taken down afterwards, but many admired it to the point it became one of Paris’ famous monument.

Paris is as exciting and cryptic as it’s sultry and calm, and there is so much to do on a limited budget. If you’re a New Yorker or someone who idolize  NYC, Paris is the perfect destination for your next visit. Paris, often dubbed as New York City’s elder sibling, shares a remarkable likeness as NYC. I mean, where do you think NYC received the Statue of Liberty from?

And I’ll let you in on a secret no one knows. Do you ever wonder why the French survive on high-carb food but don’t experience dramatic weight gains? Because everything is prepared fresh, you can eat carbs for breakfast and dinner without worrying about gaining a few extra pounds.

So, feel free to be frugal, but don’t forget to go all out when you want to.

Exploring Paris – A Different Angle

We think it’s a must to explore popular monuments from well-known spots, but I found exploring them from unseen angles gives you the best view.

I was also able to interact with the locals, dance along to groovy jamming sessions, and take scenic walks alone at night. That is a great part of Paris; most of the city’s safe even late at night, so you won’t have to hold keys awkwardly between your fingers out of fear.

Although there will be a few weirdos nearby, but ignore them like every New Yorkian does.

My recent 5 days trip to El Salvador was nothing but a beautiful experience that I’m going to cherish forever. This small part of the world is less crowdy – but offers a plethora of things to tourists. It’s a great getaway from the hustles and bustles of city life. Though I didn’t participate in many activities, I got a chance to unwind amidst the breathtaking nature, from sparkling blue waters to the lush forests to mighty peaks. On top of that, I can never forget the warm and kind people of El Salvador – they made me feel right at home.

Day 1:

I boarded an Avianca Airline flight to El Salvador. I bought a first-class ticket to travel in comfort – but man, I was wrong. Despite paying extra, no amenities were given. The flight was delayed (I should’ve trusted the reviews), there was no TV, and only water and coffee were given. To be very honest, there is not much difference between their economy and first-class, so it is not worth paying more for the same services. Future reference, if you ever decide to fly with Avianca, just book an economy ticket.

Thankfully, that horrible flight time ended, and I arrived in El Salvador. I checked into the Mandala Eco Villas, where I spent the first two nights of my stay. Mandala Eco Villas is located in Surf City which by the name of the city you can already guess is where all the surfing happen. Since I was traveling with two other companions, I booked the ‘family room’ as it came with two queen beds. If you’re traveling with your significant other, I highly recommend booking this hotel in El Salvador. For a more intimate experience, look into Hut 3, which comes with an outdoor shower. Every accommodation here comes with a patio with sea views.

The Reception:

The friendly staff at Mandala Eco Villas made us feel welcome from the moment we stepped in. They knew and remembered our names, creating a personalized and warm atmosphere. I was provided a private driver, Edwardo (you can find his page here on Instagram). The hotel’s entrance itself was an adventure; we felt like entering a jungle with so much to look forward to. What’s more, the hotel is conveniently located on the beach, offering easy access to the sandy shores. While the hotel offered a remarkable experience overall, it did come with one downside—the absence of hot water. Despite this minor inconvenience, I loved staying here and recommend you spend at least a night here – I promise you will not regret it.

Day 2:

On the second day of my stay in El Salvador, I decided to go to Café Albania – two hours drive away from my hotel. Café Albania, located in Apaneca, is one of the most popular attractions due to its hedge maze. For a small fee of $35 USD, you will have access to all the attractions as well as the café. After experiencing the excitement of navigating through the hedges and taking in the breathtaking views of the valley during a bike ride, I indulged in a delicious cup of coffee sourced from the Albania finca.

After spending some time at Café, I headed towards the nearby hot spring“Termales Santa Teresa,” just 20 minutes’ drive away from Café Albania. The thermal waters and mud baths of Santa Teresa have been serving people for more than 100 years, and they are well known for their healing properties. This hidden gem offers an all-inclusive package for $20 per person. The package includes access to the spa, a rejuvenating mud bath, lunch and more. However, you have to pay extra for massages. You can start by applying mineral mud on your body and face, then enter the sauna, followed by the sulfur pool to exfoliate the minerals, leaving your skin soft and smooth and your body relaxed. I cannot recommend this experience enough!

Day 3:

On day 3, before checking out, I embarked on an exciting surfing adventure with the “Surf Strong School” for only $50 which includes pictures and videos. It is located less than 10 minutes away from my hotel. The friendly and knowledgeable instructors of the school made my first surfing experience unforgettable. Despite being a beginner, I managed to catch some impressive waves, all thanks to their lessons and how patient they were while teaching me. After two exhilarating hours on the surfboard, I headed back to the hotel for a scrumptious breakfast before checking out and continuing my journey to the next destination.

A tip: The school also provides local tours and airport shuttle service.

Day 4:

The second hotel on my itinerary was the luxurious Garten Hotel, where I spent the remaining two nights in the opulent penthouse suite. To my delight, the staff greeted me with rose petals and a heartwarming birthday surprise (which, admittedly, came at an extra cost). As a guest in the penthouse suite, I was treated to complimentary welcome drinks. The suite itself was on the side of the hotel, offering exclusivity and privacy. If you are looking for an all-inclusive hotel that provides all the amenities with a luxury experience, you should book your stay here.

As the journey was tiring, I booked only one activity for this day, “Tamanique Waterfall,” through my hotel. The hotel provided me with a personal driver and tour guide who accompanied me throughout the journey. To my delight, the hotel also provided a cooler, an essential item for this adventure. The waterfall is only minutes away from the breathtaking Playa El Tunco. After 25 minutes of drive from the beach, there is a small hike of 30 minutes that takes you to the falls. While getting to the waterfall was a difficult task, involving stepping over rocks and descending numerous stairs, the experience was well worth it. However, I must admit that the return journey was equally challenging, as retracing my steps through the same terrain proved to be demanding. Nevertheless, the captivating beauty of the Tamanique Waterfall made this experience unforgettable.

Day 5:

On my final day in El Salvador, with my flight scheduled for the afternoon, I decided to visit the famous Rainbow Slide located inside of a restaurant ‘Picnic Steak House’. After waking up early in the morning, I made my way to the slides, which only cost $5 per ride. This thrilling attraction provided a perfect ending to my remarkable journey, allowing me to indulge in a 60-second adrenaline-pumping fun before bidding farewell to this stunning country.

Introduction:

I recently went to Brazil to have my hair styled by Bruno, a maestro in handling natural hair textures. In the United States, where I come from, our naturally thick, afro-textured hair is often subject to prejudice. Those like me, with what we proudly call our ‘crown,’ have grown up using harsh chemical treatments like perms because many people are unfamiliar with or do not know how to care for type 4 hair.

New York City took a significant step in 2019 by passing the Crown Act, which outlaws discrimination based on hair texture, style, and length, particularly for people of color. Despite this act, finding the right salon for handling natural hair in the city remains a daunting task. The high cost and limited availability of natural hair specialists in NYC further compound the challenges faced by individuals seeking appropriate care for their hair, making it more difficult for individuals to embrace their natural hair. Basic services like a wash and blow dry can set you back at least $100, excluding the cost of styling. And if you wish to style your hair, you’re looking at upwards of $200+.

My decision to visit Brazil, where natural hair is promoted and embraced, reflects the need for inclusivity and accessibility in hair care services. The affordability and the attentiveness of Bruno’s salon, Villa Baoba, indicate a positive environment for natural hair care. Although Villa Baoba may not have access to the advanced tools available in the United States, their resourcefulness and dedication to meeting the needs of their clients with type 4 hair is commendable.

Villa Baoba:

Upon arrival at Villa Baoba, the first pleasant surprise was an employee name Dri who spoke fluent English. An unexpected but welcome boon for an American like myself, who is often challenged by language barriers in foreign countries. To my delight, Bruno was also a content creator like me and an exceptionally talented hairdresser. He was more than willing to let me document the entire process through video.

Bruno began by examining my hair, assessing its thickness and hydration levels, before guiding me towards the wash station. One of the workers revealed a little secret while massaging my scalp – the feel-good factor during a hair wash is a sign that the hair is still dirty and needs further cleansing. Who knew that a satisfying scalp massage was a coded message from your hair, indicating a need for additional washing? Once done cleaning my hair thoroughly, they moved on to toning. My hair, now damp from the wash, was left to dry naturally as they don’t use hair dryers. Given the scorching weather outside, this made complete sense to me.

With my hair sufficiently dried, Bruno set out to give me a trim. He sectioned my hair before starting the cutting process. Unlike the usual practice in America where the hair is styled first and then trimmed, Bruno was doing it the other way around. I bid farewell to my split ends, watching them being snipped away with a certain satisfaction. Once trimmed, my hair revealed a beautiful, bright color. Bruno, with nothing more than his skilled hands, a bit of mousse, and curl cream, worked through each strand, ensuring it was perfectly curled. No complicated tools, no extra products – just his hands followed by a diffuser to fully dry my hair. The result was nothing short of stunning. My hair looked healthier and brighter, and the curls looked simply amazing.

Conclusion:

To say that a visit to Villa Baoba was enjoyable would be an understatement. It was a transformative experience that introduced me to new ways of hair care and allowed me to enjoy the simple pleasure of having my hair done by talented professionals. Villa Baoba’s approach to hair care was minimalist yet incredibly effective, and their English-speaking staff made the entire experience seamless.

If you share my hair type, I would wholeheartedly recommend this salon. This isn’t just a place to get your hair done; it’s a place where you learn, engage, and leave feeling beautiful, satisfied, and enlightened. My experience traveling to Brazil to get my hair done by Bruno highlights the challenges faced by individuals with type 4 hair in finding proper care and representation in the United States.
